She taught him to write, and he learned to read and paint - holding a paint brush with the toes of his left foot. His mother, who had 22 children, of whom 13 survived, refused to put him in an institution. He would jerk and shake and often slaver. He could not control any part of his body except his left foot. ![]() His speech consisted largely of grunts understood by his family and close friends. In his early years he could not stand, walk, feed himself or drink. His most recent work s were ''Shadow on Summer'' and a collection of poems, ''Backgro und Music.'' ![]() It told of the subculture of Kimmage, a working-class Dublin suburb in whi ch Mr. Born with severe cerebral palsy, Brown went on to become a successful author, painter, and poet, even though he lacked control and dexterity of his limbs, with the exception of his left foot.
